Trucks and SUVs are facing a big threat to their survival because of the ever increasing cost to fill up the tank. Ford suspended production of the Expedition and the more luxurious twin, the Lincoln Navigator at their truck plant in Wayne, Michigan for 9 weeks as sales have plummeted a staggering 43% and 37%. Ford isn’t the only one taking tough measures as Toyota laid off 200 temp workers at their San Antonio plant that produces their full-size Tundras. Earlier this month, GM announced plans to close 4 (yes, FOUR) plants that produce trucks and SUVs. They are also considering selling the HUMMER brand, as they have become as unfashionable as they were fashionable when the H2 first debuted in 2003. Today, GM announced their intentions to lengthen the lifespan of their current truck and SUV lineup to keep costs down.
My thoughts? If there are going to be less young, spoiled, bleached-blonde daddy’s girls driving their Yukon Denalis, swerving on the 405 fwy while talking on their cell phones, I’m all for it. While I feel for people who really need trucks and SUVs, how many of drivers actually put them to their intended use? Definitely not as many as are sold.
